Market Manners Dog Test

Market Manners matter to those of us at the Kingston Farmers’ Market. This test is to recognize that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a welcome addition to our market. Dogs historically have been part of the farm setting, performing necessary work in and around the farm while providing companionship to the farmer during the long workday. In today’s setting the dog is more companion than worker and people of all backgrounds enjoy a friendly, well-behaved dog. One poorly behaved dog and/or irresponsible owner can destroy privileges for all.  We at the Kingston Farmers’ Market would like to welcome all mannerly dogs to our market.

The Market Manners Dog Test will be conducted at the Kingston Farmers’ Market on designated Saturdays throughout the outdoor season. To pass the test a dog must prove he/she can behave to the four standards of the Market Manner Dog listed on this brochure. Those dogs awarded the grade of KFM Market Dog will receive a certificate and be eligible for a Sloppy Kisses dog biscuit, courtesy of Pawprints & Whiskers, on each visit to the market.

The KFM Market Dog:
1. Can walk on a loose leash through a crowd.  Remains relaxed and calm in a crowded public setting with lots of noise and action happening.
2. Exhibits self-control when meeting all people and other dogs. Can walk pass people and dogs without pulling, lunging or barking/growling.
3. Is able to safely be approached by people of all ages. Accepts the approach of strangers and overtures of a child.
4. Shows manners and obedience at vendor tables.  Avoids sniffing, licking or tasting products on or around a vendor’s table.
